‘The Wolverine’ sequel to film after ‘X-Men Apocalypse,’ setting up 2017 or 2018 release
Hugh Jackman will be back as Wolverine, barring a major shocker from Fox. Director James Mangold has confirmed that The Wolverine 2 will film after Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
Responding to fan @R__E__D_R__U__M on Twitter about when we might see The Wolverine 2, Mangold responded:
@R__E__D_R__U__M@20centuryfox@ShuDonner We are figuring it all out. At the moment, I’m shooting The next #Wolverine after #XmenApocalypse. — Mangold (@mang0ld) March 15, 2014
Collider notes “This means that the earliest we’ll see a new, solo Wolverine movie is 2017 or 2018. The larger question is if Hugh Jackman will still be playing the character. If he does return, he will have played Wolverine for almost two decades.”
Fans don’t seem to mind as 2013’s The Wolverine earned just $415 million in worldwide box office receipts.
Scheduling-wise, that sounds feasible for Fox and X-Men fans. If The Fantastic Four can arrive in 2015, then the studio will have a major superhero flick yearly and seem competive with Disney’s MCU and Sony’s planned Spidey films.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled out in theaters on May 27, 2016.
