‘The Incredibles 2’ details revealed at D23: Underminer, Jack Jack’s powers, Edna video

Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter took the stage at the Disney Animation D23 Expo to introduce one of the most anticipated movies on the company’s slate: The Incredibles 2. The cast is returning and fans were told about may of the story details, beginning with writer/director Brad Bird opening with Edna Mode jokes.

The “retrospective” Edna clip was released online, watch it below.

The new versions of the Parr family are just minor updates from the 2004 original with Bird stating that the creators can use modern technology and animation techniques they wish they had for the first movie. He compared the subtle changes and improved animation to having a newer, better car.

Incredibles 2 will pick up immediately after the first film, which ended without the family knowing that Jack Jack has powers, and they’re planning to have fun with that, teased with a clip for the fans.

“The Incredibles 2” concept art

Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter told IGN on Friday, coming the time line and villain: “It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on,” Lasseter said.”It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that’s where (we) start this movie.”

The Underminer, a villain voiced by Pixar regular John Ratzenberger, does indeed show up at the very end of the first movie, after an indication that three months have passed since the events that take up much of the film.

“One of the unique things about The Incredibles is it’s really a story of a family set in the world of superheroes,” Lasseter went on to say. “This one carries on that theme.”

Bird says, there will be new heroes “with amazing powers that rival The Incredibles.

This time around, “a certain chain of events puts (Helen) at the forefront of action, while Bob has to stay home to face his biggest challenge yet,” says Bird.

During the clip Bob is asleep in the house as Jack Jack wakes up to noise outside: a raccoon. Jack Jack teleports through the wall and the raccoon attacks. Jack Jack’s array of powers: flaming on like the Human Torch, firing lasers from his eyes and elastic skin.

Bob wakes up, races outside to the commotion as Jack Jack’s powers are raging. Bob speaks: “Oh, my. You have powers!”

The cast came out on stage: Craig T. Nelson is back as Bob/Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Helen/Elastigirl, Sarah Vowell as Violet, and Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone. The young actor Huck Milner is stepping in to voice Dash, who received advice from Jackson had one piece of advice for him: “Never read the comments.”

The Incredibles 2 is expected to hit theaters on June 15, 2018.
