‘The Hunger Games Catching Fire’ and Disney’s ‘Frozen’ lead the way to biggest Thanksgiving box office of all-time

Cue the headlines which will include the words feast, famine, Thanksgiving and the record breaking box office for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen.

It’s also the sixth-biggest opening on record, and ranks third all-time among 2D-only movies. Now the biggest Thanksgiving box office ever can be added to the resume.

Homefront and Black Nativity opened to subpar numbers but overall the weekend exceeded ambitious expectations.

“For a company whose foundation is built on animation, an opening like this is really great,” said Disney distribution exec Dave Hollis, who praised the efforts of the filmmakers and the studio’s marketing team for the Frozen opening.

“You can be very targeted with a message, and the team really stoked the fire without alienating any one particular audience segment,” he added.

Popular with the critics and a likely Oscar candidate, Philomena opened strong with $5615 per screen.
