During SDCC the creators confirmed that the humor was key to the show.
“It was very much a conscious decision. I think part of that was because even in the comic books and in the DNA of the character, he was always sort of a fanboy,” said producer Greg Berlanti. “He was always wild-eyed and couldn’t believe some of the people he was hanging out with and there was a bright blue skies kind of demeanor. And comedic and good with a quip. And so you put all those things together and it kind of tells you the tone it wants to be, I think, a lot of times.”
“He’s just so sweet,” said Gustin of his character. “I’ve played so many characters that I would never be friends with or wouldn’t want to be in the same room with. So, it’s nice to play somebody that people like and I would like. And he’s funny and cool. I may never play a cooler character.”
“You’re still in a heightened world,” Berlanti said of his star. “So, it was like introducing an organ to a body, I think. In part, so much of that is with Grant [Gustin]. When he came into the Arrow universe, if you can believe in him, and you want to believe in him and what happened to him, you would want to be in that world. I believe it’s our connection with the actors that give it the most grounding.”
The Flash begins October 7 on The CW
