‘The Eternals’ will arrive November 2020, big part of Marvel’s phase 4

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, unveiled the Phase 4 slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at Comic-Con featuring films and Disney+ shows, beginning in May of 2020, with Black Widow. Feige confirmed and revealed details surrounding The Eternals.

Marvel is tapping an all-star cast, led by Angelina Jolie.

“I’m so excited to be here,” Jolie said during Marvel’s panel. “I’m going to work 10 times harder because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family, I know what we all need to do. We have all read the script. We have all know what the task ahead is and we are all going to be working very, very hard. I’m training. I am thrilled. Thank you so much.”

The Eternals, directed by The Rider’s Chloe Zhao, will star Jolie as Thena, along with Richard Madden (Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh).

“It’s about this group of incredible immortals, but through their journey, we really get to explore what it means to be human and humanity on our time on this planet,” Zhao said.

“The Eternals are a race of immortal aliens sent to Earth by the Celestials to protect humankind from the Deviants,” added Madden.

Ridloff’s Makkari will be the first deaf character in the MCU.

Based on a series penned by comic book legend Jack Kirby, The Eternals is something “entirely new and entirely different,” producer Kevin Feige teased. Like the comics, the film will focus on a group of immortals that have been on Earth for thousands of years.

Zhao added, “Through their journey, we really get to explore what it means to be human.”

Matthew and Ryan Firpo penned the script.

Previously, Feige said: “Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them. Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

The Eternals arrives next fall on November 6, 2020.
