The CW picks up ‘Black Lightning’ for a full season with Cress Williams as title character

The CW has picked up DC drama Black Lightning, from producer Greg Berlanti, so now their comic book universe will continue to grow.

Black Lightning is the latest from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce, played by Cress Williams (Hart of Dixie).

Pierce made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter, Jennifer, hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.

Williams will star with Nefessa Williams, China Anne McClain and Christine Adams. Salim Akil will serve as showrunner on project, which he co-created with wife Mara Brock Akil through their Akil Productions shingle.

The duo executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, the head of his Greg Berlanti Productions.

Black Lightning is a DC Universe version of Electro, the Spider-Man villain, able to generate, absorb, and direct electricity, which he uses in a variety of ways to take down bad guys. Pierce gave up his work as a superhero after the birth of his daughter, so that he could provide her with a normal and less dangerous life, the family dynamic changed when she began to show signs of meta-human abilities.

There is no word if there will be crossovers with the other shows/heroes, Earth-1’s Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Earth-38’s Supergirl.

Williams’ resume includes roles o Code Black, Friday Night Lights, Prison Break, ER, Close to Home and Nash Bridges.
