‘The Avengers’ returning to theaters for Labor Day Weekend
With the Blu-ray/DVD release of “The Avengers” less than a month away, the film is making a surprise return to theaters for the Labor Day weekend. Joss Whedon’s film continues to inch closer to the $1.5 billion worldwide and this weekend could easily push the total over that mark.
The announcement came Thursday on film’s Facebook page that will be back in theaters this Labor Day weekend (“Coming this weekend”) so fans can experience the acclaimed superhero film on the big screen one last time before the Blu-ray release.
Whedon talked about the massive box office figures with Vulture on Thursday. These figures include the “Biggest Opening Weekend of All-Time.”
“You know, at some point, the numbers become meaningless. They’re large, and you can’t really count that high. I felt like I had a particular mission in making what I felt was a slightly old-fashioned movie, because I grew up wanting to make summer movies and wanting to make superhero movies, and I got to do both at once. I felt like summer movies haven’t been what I remember them to be, so I felt like I would love to evoke something that’s less hip and ironic and more heartfelt and character-driven, and apparently, other people cared about that in a large way.”
Whedon has already been locked up by Disney to write and direct “Avengers 2” as well as begin work on a TV series called “S.H.I.E.L.D.” based on the secret agency in the Marvel Universe.
“The important thing to me is that we know what the show is. We love what it is. It came together very organically, so when we went in to pitch [to Marvel], it wasn’t like, We’re trying to find this because you want a TV show, it was, Check this out. And that’s a good way to walk in a room.”
“Avengers” comes to Blu-Ray/DVD on September 25 with 30 minutes of additional deleted scenes and featurettes.
The Marvel Studios contines to string together the next set of films, starting with next summer’s “Iron Man 3” and “Thor: The Dark World.” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” are slated for a 2014 release with the “Avengers” sequel arriving in 2015.
