‘The Avengers’ has record opening with $178.4 million International Debut
This Friday director Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ arrives in US theaters, but the film opened overseas in several international markets, nearly taking in $200 million.
Totally $178.4 million in 39 territories, included record weekends in Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
‘Avengers’ also had the biggest opening for a superhero film in the United Kingdom earning $24.7 million. In Australia, the film took in $19.7 million for the country’s second highest opening ever.
Marvel and Disney must be pleased with the huge opening which doesn’t include the US, China or Russia. More and more films are opening abroad before coming to the US. ‘The Adventures of Tintin” was breaking records overseas for weeks before coming to America.
Universal’s film ‘Battleship’ (starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch) has been in foreign theaters for a month (already) and doesn’t open in the US until May 18th.
Some projections have ‘The Avengers’ earning as much as $150 million in its opening weekend.
‘Avengers’ brings together Marvel greatest superheroes, starring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man0, Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
