Texas reports 45 Cyclospora cases, Iowa tops 100 cases
Texas health officials are reporting 45 cases of the parasitic infection Cyclospora, joining the Midwestern states of Iowa and Nebraska investigating outbreaks.
According to a NBCDFW.com report today, cases include 10 in Dallas County, 11 in Tarrant County, six in Denton County and 14 in Collin County — a total of 41 in North Texas.
Previous case counts of cyclospora in Texas show that there were 44 in 2012, 14 in 2011 and nine in 2010.
In Dallas County for example, only 12 cases have been identified in Dallas during the preceding 12 years.
Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) director, Zachary Thompson says they are continuing to investigate the possible food sources of contamination and who may have been exposed to them.
Health officials are trying to determine whether the North Texas cases confirmed this week are part of an outbreak that has reached parts of the Midwest. More than 150 cases have been reported from Iowa and Nebraska.
The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting 102 cases of the parasitic infection according to a case count released July 18.
