Texas Rep Joaquin Castro calls for Congress to impeach Trump over immigration Executive Order
Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro says Congress should draw up “articles of impeachment” against President Trump over his executive order, which temporarily prohibits the arrival of Syrian refugees into the United States and limits entry from seven other Islamic nations.
During an interview on the order and the action of the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP), Castro told BuzzFeed that “There should be a resolution of censure….and if he does it again, there should be articles of impeachment.”
Working from the list of countries identified under President Obama, the Trump EO slows down entry of citizens from Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Libya — all worn torn areas, ravaged by Islamic State.
Castro joined fellow Democrats in Congress to “investigate whether President Trump intentionally exceeded his constitutional authority” by ignoring a stay from federal judges. Castro said that if Trump ignores the judge’s orders, it would be like “living in a military junta.”
CBP spokesperson Gillian Christensen has rebuked the claims that her agency is ignoring the emergency stay.
“CBP officers are not detaining anyone. Green card holders who arrive in the U.S. have to go through secondary screening but that process is working smoothly and relatively quickly,” Christensen told BuzzFeed.
Castro, who is considering running for the Senate against Senator Ted Cruz in 2018, continued: “There’s no longer any checks and balances,” Castro said.
The high profile move by President Trump has initiated protests over delays and detainments all over the country as the Executive Order is portrayed as a Muslim ban, which it is NOT, more HERE
