Teacher Megan Silberberger regarded as ‘hero’ for trying to stop Washington shooter
A high school teacher tried to stop a gunman who opened fire on the crowded lunchroom, killing one girl and wounding four other students, authorities said Saturday.
Witnesses identified the shooter as Jaylen Fryberg, 14, a popular Marysville-Pilchuck High School freshman who was just recognized at Homecoming. The students attack was hindered by the intervention of social studies teacher Megan Silberberger according to details.
Fryberg fatally shot himself, according to police, after killing one and injuring his two cousins, two female friends. Daily Mail detailed the theory that this was over a love triangle where his cousin began dating a girl Jaylen liked.
Silberberger is believed to ran into the cafeteria and grabbed Jaylen’s arm during the shooting, disrupting the rampage. A lunchroom worker is also said to have intervened.
“I believe she’s actually the real hero. She’s the one that intercepted him with the gun. He tried either reloading or tried aiming at her. She tried moving his hand away and he tried shooting and shot himself in the neck,” Erick Cervantes told KIRO.
He said the gunshots followed a verbal altercation between Jaylen and Andrew Fryberg, cousins.
“It started off with an argument, but then I looked back and there was just gunshots and just people falling down,” Cervantes recalled to KIRO. And immediately after the gunshots, the (woman) intervened, he said.
Andrew Fryberg, 15, and Hatch, are at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Susan Gregg, the hospital’s spokeswoman, said. Fryberg is in critical condition and Hatch is listed in serious condition, she said.
The girls were identified as Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano, both 14, according to ProvidenceRegional Medical Center Everett’s chief medical officer Dr. Joanne Roberts. They were in critical condition with head injuries.
