Tea Party Express endorses ‘establishment’ John McCain
While the Tea Party has evolved greatly, news that the Tea Party Express has openly endorsed John McCain proves that the group is not that far removed from the GOP establishment and mainstream politicians.
In fact, the Tea Party Express Co-Founder and Chief Strategist Sal Russo notes knowing McCain for forty years before claiming McCain has fought to reduce “the size and intrusiveness of the federal government.”
Critics would quickly point to McCain on foreign policy, immigration and regulation all contradict that assertion. While the Democrat in the race may be a horrible choice for the group, silence over endorsement may have been a better option.
FULL STATEMENT
Tea Party Express, the nation’s largest Tea Party political action committee, has expressed its support for Senator John McCain for re-election as Senator from the State of Arizona.
Tea Party Express Co-Founder and Chief Strategist Sal Russo said, “Senator John McCain is an important voice and leader on issues involving national security and defense, and has been a stalwart conservative fighting to reduce the size and cost of government in Washington.
“Republicans, Conservatives and the Tea Party all need John McCain in the Senate. He has become a leading voice for keeping America strong in the world and following the Reagan philosophy of ‘peace through strength. His foresight in recommending the Iraqi surge was a critical component of our success, a success that President Obama has frittered away.
“I have known John McCain for over 40 years. He has always been a leading advocate for a core Tea Party goal: reducing the size and intrusiveness of the federal government. He has never wavered in his opposition to the out-of-control spending that has pushed our country to an unsustainable national debt. We need this leadership to continue,” Russo concluded.
