Tampa: University Area CDC to present Prodigy Showcase on April 30
The University Area Community and Development Corporation (University Area CDC) will present the Prodigy Showcase on April 30th at 12 pm, in celebration of Prodigy’s 15th anniversary.
Youth ages seven to 17 from the University Area CDC’s Prodigy Cultural Arts Program will perform several dance pieces in this free event, at the beautiful new University Area Pavilion at 14013 N. 22nd St. in Tampa. In addition to the dances, young musicians will perform on drums and guitar and visual art by Prodigy students will be on display.
Similar events will be held throughout April, deemed Prodigy Celebration Month, in the six of the seven counties that Prodigy serves.
The Prodigy Cultural Arts Program uses an innovative approach to empower, educate and enable at-risk youth, providing a doorway to a better world. Youth ages 7 to 17 experience performing and visual arts, taught as a tool for self-expression, to learn communication, exploration, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
Established in 2000, when University Area CDC was just two years old, Prodigy has thrived and is achieving its mission of transforming lives. With the championing of Sen. Victor Crist, generous funding from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and leadership of the University Area CDC, the program now reaches across seven counties, has 13 partner sites and has spread to 45 programming locations. In 2015 alone, more than 3,400 youth experienced the benefits of Prodigy.
University Area CDC is a 501(c)(3) public/private partnership whose mission is children and family development, crime prevention and commerce growth. Its primary focus is the redevelopment and sustainability of the at-risk areas surrounding the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida. The University Area CDC was named Nonprofit of the Year for Public and Societal Benefit by the Tampa Bay Business Journal in 2011 and 2012.
