Taika Waititi discusses directing an episode of ‘The Mandalorian,’ the tone and love for Boba Fett
At today’s FX TCA today, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi talked aobut directing an episode of Disney+ Star Wars streaming series The Mandalorian, being led by Iron Man director Jon Favreau.
Waititi said “it was amazing. Favreau is a genius…it’s fun doing something in the Star Wars universe. It’s a strangest to see a Stormtrooper, and then when you’re doing a scene with 50 or 60 of them, it’s amazing.”
Don’t worry Taikia fans, it will have some of his energetic, comical and colorful style.
“A little bit, but Star Wars is very different to the Marvel style. The tone of the first films really should be adhered to, it’s what the fans like. You can’t disrespect it. Definitely my tone is in there.”
He’s quite in touch with the fans and fan favorite bounty hunter.
“For most kids growing up with those films, [Boba Fett] was one of the most favorite characters, even though he’s barely in the films,” Waititi said. “Just the idea of bounty hunters, the helmets are so cool. Just getting to see characters like that and getting to shoot with them is pretty cool.”
Waititi is currently finishing his Fox Searchlight Hitler satire Jojo Rabbit with additional footage and editing, prepping for release later this year.
The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Equalizer 2, Wonder Woman 1984), Gina Carano (Haywire, Deadpool, Furious 6), famous actor Nick Nolte and Giancarlo Esposito (Once Upon a Time).
Others listed in the cast are Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers,Omid Abtahi and Werner Herzog.
The first season will have 8 episodes. R5-84, the red droid in New Hope, and IG-88 was spotted on set (or ‘leaked’ via photos published by Favreau)….nothing else is really known.
