Syracuse-area native, Nina Davuluri, crowned Miss America 2014, but not without social media fuss
Miss New York, and native of the Syracuse suburb, Fayetteville, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014 Sunday night at the birthplace of the legendary competition in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.
Nina is the second consecutive contestant from New York and the first contestant of Indian descent to win the Miss America Competition.
“I was the first Indian Miss New York, and I’m so proud to be the first Indian Miss America,” Nina Davuluri said after she won.
Nina is a graduate of University of Michigan. During her year as Miss America she will serve as spokesperson for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) this year as she travels to Washington, DC to work with the Department of Education.
Davuluri’s victory has unfortunately caused some petty bickering, particularly on social media where some commented that the she was “not American enough” and worse statements.
However, Nina replied, “I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
According to the Miss America pageant, Nina is the first Miss America to be crowned in Atlantic City, the competition’s birthplace, since 2005.
Following Nina was Miss California, Crystal Lee as First Runner up and Miss Oklahoma, Kelsey Griswold was Second Runner up.
