Susan Rice withdraws from Secretary of State nomination process

Susan Rice, the embattled U.N. ambassador, abruptly withdrew from consideration to be the next secretary of state on Thursday after the bitter battle with Republicans didn’t seem likely to end.

Rice’s political troubles in the wake of the Benghazi attacks were not going away and support for her nomination appeared to be waning in recent days.

Massachusetts Senator and former Presidential candidate John Kerry now becomes the likely choice to replace Hillary Clinton administration officials added.

“While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character,” President Obama said.

A Kerry nomination could open the door for Scott Brown to run and replace the Senator after losing in the November election.

Clinton, in a brief statement, said Rice had “been an indispensable partner over the past four years” and that she was confident “that she will continue to represent the United States with strength and skill.”
