Strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake hits near Guatemala City
A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck 6km NNW of San Jose Pinula, Guatemala, according to a US Geologic Survey (USGS) report March 25.
The tremor hit at 23:02:14.46 UTC today.
Other cities close to the quake’s epicenter include Guatemala City, Santa Catarina Pinula and Palencia, all less than 10 miles from the quake.
According to the Richter magnitude scale, an earthquake that registers at 6.0-6.9 is considered strong. It can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometers (99 mi) across in populated areas. There are only approximately 130 earthquakes of this magnitude seen annually across the globe.
