Stephen Lang teases ‘Avatar 2’ as ‘groudbreaking’ ‘Avatar on steroids’

While promoting his Braven, Stephen Lang teased fans about James Cameron’s Avatar 2, a long-awaited sequel the blockbuster.

Lang recently shared his experience on working with the new tech and its style of filming.

“Well, in ways that are probably too numerous or too, kind of, complex or too subtle for me to even articulate right now,” Lang told Screen Rant. “I mean, look it’s no secret that we’re doing a lot of underwater motion capture, which, in itself is groundbreaking, it just hasn’t been done.”

Lang discussed the challenges of the film, but implied how Cameron is no stranger to shooting sequences involving plenty of water. As he put it, the underwater world is “extremely beautiful, fascinating, and challenging” even to him.

“So, you know, there’s sections that taker place. . . so, that in itself is a big deal,” he added. “But just, what are we, three months into shooting now, it’s like nothing I’ve done before.”

As for the sequel itself, Lang reassures it will not stray too far from its roots. The actor says it is in many ways, reminiscent of the original film, describing it as “Avatar on steroids.”

Lang will reprise his role of Miles Quaritch who served as the primary villain in the first film.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao and Giovanni Ribisi, are all returning to reprise their roles from the first blockbuster smash.

New to Avatar 2, with roles in the subsequent films, is stars Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin and Cliff Curtis.

Filming began on the second and third “Avatar” films in September, while plot details remain under wraps.

Cameron and Jon Landau are producing the films which are aiming for a Christmas 2020 and a Christmas 2021 release.

Winslet’s mysterious Avatar role is a character who’s part of the Sea People, the reef people. Curtis stars as Tonowari, the leader of a clan of reef people, and Game of Thrones’ Oona Chaplin as Varang, a prominent character described as being strong and vibrant.

Avatar 2 is set to premiere on December 18, 2020, while Avatar 3 will follow on December 17, 2021. The fourth film will premiere on December 20, 2024, while the fifth will hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
