Stephen Colbert promotes Convoy of Hope raising over $100K with ‘Colbert Bump’

The famous Comedy Central talk show host encouraged his fans to support Springfield’s Convoy of Hope, which is currently working to help victims of the massive typhoon in the Philippines.

Stephen Colbert mocked China for donating a meager $100K and then called his fans and supporters to exceed that figure.

Stephen Colbert Convoy of Hope Philippines Colbert Bump photo“Seriously, the nation of China pledged only $100,000? I bet the Colbert Nation could give more than that,” Colbert said, to cheers from the audience.

“You know what? You know what, folks? Let’s do it. Nation, let’s out-donate China. To donate $10 to Convoy of Hope’s typhoon response efforts, just text COLBERT to 50555. Your donation will help bring clean water and food to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.”

At 2:47 p.m., approximately 16 hours after the show aired, Convoy of Hope said it eclipsed Colbert’s $100,000 goal. As of 4:30 p.m., it was up to $108,320 in donations.

“We got a call from a producer at the Stephen Colbert show and they said they wanted to do our texting campaign at Convoy of Hope,” says Jeff Nene with Convoy of Hope.

The famous Colbert bump means a national spotlight for the recipient and a flood of support.

Convoy’s team rushed to personalize the text campaign and graphic at Colbert’s request.

“He wanted to be able to track how many texts came in,” says Nene. “How much money we were able to raise from his show.”

Convoy of Hope has a massive project underway, helping typhoon victims in the Philippines and worldwide. COH has worked in the Philippines for years.

I wanted to contribute to Stephen Colbert’s Convoy of Hope challenge but since I don’t “text” I guess I can’t. Isn’t there an alternate method to be included in the Colbert Bump Challenge? It’s pretty limiting and exclusive otherwise.
