Star Wars Celebration VI: Weird finds, fun stuff and surprise faces

There were plenty of excitement at Star Wars Celebration VI this last weekend, celebrating all things Star Wars. From great celebrities to laser tag to a surprise visit by George Lucas himself, the convention had something for every Star Wars fan.

One of the popular and fun aspects of the convention was the bizarre and unorthodox cosplay visitors which included a Jack Sparrow donning Stormtrooper armor, a Captain America Ewok, a Darth Vader chicken or Spider-Man. Animal Stormtrooper turned heads and posed with countless fans for photos, Obi Gyn Kenobi made fans chuckle, while Jean Luc Picard seemed to cause to scratch their heads.

One pair, self-proclaimed “Rebel Alliance Quidditch Team” embraced the amalgam theme with a Facebook page and the slogan: “Because one can never lose too many fandoms.”

Matthew Reinhart was on-hand to autograph and discuss his new Star Wars Pop-Up Book (check it out on Amazon here) and the Reynolds Advanced Materials offered detailed advice on sculpting and creating props or costumes made of resin/silicon rubber.

Reynolds offers full helmets and tons of items on their website, but Oki (a few booths away) stopped fans as well with his detailed Star Wars sculpting. A Darth Vader cucumber headlined a vast array of items from a radish, rutabaga and other vegetables that would make Veggietale fans stop and take notice.

“I’ve been carving Star Wars items for eight years,” Oki explained. His Sushi Bistro Facebook Page features more details or go to his blog to see more of his amazing work.

The Orange County Convention Center is a massive facility, with four floors of activities and “stuff,” keeping Star Wars fans hopping. From an AT-AT backpack to an action figure set of the Cantina Band to hundreds of collectibles. Prop Store (propstore.com) stopped even the casual fan.

Glass cases showcased original memorabilia from the Star Wars Saga, several Lucas projects and other fan favorites such as Spaceballs. The original baby Ewok from “Return of the Jedi,” a mask and gloves set for a Cantina band member or a THX138 license plate from “American Graffiti” were the highlights.

So just when you’ve said you’ve seen it all, check out a Star Wars Celebration and discover a Gamorrean Guard reading a book to his “child,” Aayla Secure on her cell phone or Darth Vader chugging a Pepsi.
