‘Star Wars 9’: Domhnall Gleeson says JJ Abrams directing is ‘very exciting for fans’
Speaking with IGN while promoting his upcoming role in the Tom Cruise-led film, American Made, Domhnall Gleeson avoided edging questions about the exit of director Colin Trevorrow from the upcoming Star Wars 9.
The firing shocked fans as the Jurassic World filmmaker drew at odds with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and Gleeson said only this: “…but, you know, I think it’s very bad for Colin but if that was — but if the right thing to do is to part company, the most right thing to do is the same in any relationship, you know? That happens.”
On the Force Awakens director coming on board, he added, “And then with J.J., he’s a great director. I think that he did a brilliant job on the first one and it makes absolute sense why after they parted company with Colin that was the place they looked and I think it’s very exciting for the fans of the film that he’s back.”
While he will appear in The Last Jedi, his involvement in its sequel is not yet verified.
Abrams successfully relaunched the franchise, bringing back the legacy characters and introduced fans to new and exciting characters, all while earning more than $2 billion dollars at the global box office.
The question now is whether Abrams will be as good in setting a narrative up as he is in tying up all the storylines he started in The Force Awakens along with those added by Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi.
With the big shakeup, fans should expect a delay as Episode IX is set to arrive in theaters on May 24,2019.
UPDATE: The release has officially been pushed back. The final Skywalker family trilogy film will now open on Dec. 20, 2019 instead of May 24, 2019.
