‘Star Wars 9’: Director Colin Trevorrow out as Lucasfilm says ‘out visions for the project differ’

Creative differences are now being cited for the break up on a film. Disney and Lucasfilm released a statement today regarding their decision to part ways with director Colin Trevorrow for Star Wars: Episode IX: “Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

The Jurassic World director was confirmed as part of the franchise a little over 2 years ago, although Episode IX also just got a new writer, which may have been the herald of things to come.

Trevorrow initially signed on to Episode IX as a co-writer with Derek Connolly, so with the news that Jack Thorne (who has written some stellar TV series in the last few years) was being brought in to work on the script.

Trevorrow’s very poorly received The Book of Henry may have raised a red flag for the studio, which will have to react quickly for the 2019 release plans.

The only recent remarks were from Trevorrow on connecting to a younger audience: “Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia were all characters that we were able to identify with in various ways, and especially with the character of Rey and what she means to young girls right now, and the challenges that she’s up against,” he told Fandango.

“It is extremely crucial that I understand what actual children are feeling about these stories that we’re telling them, and I think it’s important that I have kids, and if filmmakers don’t have kids, they should go talk to them because they don’t see things the same way that we did when we were kids. So, yes, I am very dialed in to that because I think it’s a requisite of the job.”

He also talked about the support of the story team, Return of the Jedi being the bar against which all Star Wars movies are measured (A New Hope and Empire being seen as insurmountable and the prequels being seen as too easy to clear), Trevorrow says:

“My hope is to make it as richly satisfying as it could possibly be. I have a lot of support, and a lot of really brilliant thinkers and storytellers around me. Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group, and Michelle Rejwan, and Kathy Kennedy, my producers, and J.J. [Abrams] and Rian [Johnson], and Larry Kasdan, and when you look at this army of brilliant people that we have, it’s not me alone. It’s a whole team.”

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to open May 24, 2019.
