‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ star Chris Pine looks ahead to ‘Jack Ryan,’ working with Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Costner

While promoting his return in Star Trek Into Darkness, Chris Pine was also looking ahead to his role as Jack Ryan in the reboot of that franchise. Talking with the Vancouver Sun, Pine finds himself with huge shoes to fill in two huge franchises.

“I jumped into Jack Ryan without looking both ways,” said Pine, in a London hotel. “At one point I definitely asked myself, ‘Why am I being offered all these jobs that have been done by other people, and why am I saying, yes?’”

The film arrives this Christmas and Jack Ryan, still a CIA analyst, is uncovering a Russian plot to cripple the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.

“Jack is a lot quieter than Kirk, and he’s been scarred by his time in the military,” said Pine. “He’s a damaged man, sitting in the background, and doesn’t have the bombast of Kirk.”

Either way, he enjoys bringing life to both of the iconic personalities.

“I guess you could say there are themes and threads linking them,” he said. “But my job is to bring life to them fully formed as defined by each script.”

Star Trek Into Darkness opened May 15 in IMAX 3D and will open wide in the US on May 17.
