‘Star Trek 3’ update: Zachary Quinto says will film in early 2015 for a 2016 release date
JJ Abrams successfully rebooted the Star Trek franchise, but now hands off the franchise and fans can’t wait for news. Star Zachary Quinto says the wait may be over, with the third film in the new series shooting very soon.
“I think it’s on the horizon,” Quinto said on NBC’s Today show. “Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months.”
Roberto Orci, who co-wrote JJ Abrams’s two Star Trek films with Alex Kurtzman, will be onboard to direct the next outing for the USS Enterprise. The cast should all be back and expect some more news to drop as Quinto is currently promoting the reality television show The Chair.

Orci has claimed Star Trek 3 will be the beginning of the “five year mission” to boldly go…
“They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space,” Orci said. “In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”
Star Trek 3 is very likely arriving in theaters in 2016 to correspond to the 50th anniversary of the franchise, so check back for an official date once it’s announced.
