Spider-Man movie update: ‘Venom Carnage,’ Dr Kafka back, Rhys Ifans, ‘Sinister Six’ overview
Sony is moving ahead with expansions to their Spider-Man franchise, pushing forward with spin-off movies. First up will be The Sinister Six.
The Six is a team of Spidey’s super-villains, originally comprised of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Sandman, Mysterio and Vulture. Dane DeHaan has already signed on for the film, and others who are being speculated to join the cast are Felicity Jones (Black Cat), Paul Giamatti (Rhino) and Jamie Foxx, who played Electro in Amazing Spiderman 2. Foxx’s character appeared to die in the film, but he is pure electricity so anything is possible.
Amazing Spidey director Marc Webb has stated that the lineup is “not set,” but that seems unlikely since the film has been moved up for a 2016 release. Webb explained how Michael Massee will play Gustav Fiers aka The Gentleman.
“The man in the hat is now, we think of him as The Gentleman who is a benefactor of the Sinister Six. They all emerge from Oscorp and that they are corralled by The Gentleman… they are sort of the mercenaries of Oscorp and the most unruly, beastly set of characters.”
Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) will be directing as the film is set for a November 11, 2016 release.
“Having Goddard on board places the movie in the hands of someone who has lived in this world,” said one person who knowledge of the property told Deadline. “If you look at Cabin In The Woods, he did such a phenomenal job on that in redefining and commenting on the genre while also completely embracing it. He’s a fanboy which compliments his talents as a filmmaker.”
There is no word yet whether Andrew Garfield will be reprising his role as Spiderman in all of the spin-off films. While the actor was making the rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival, he refused to give anything away about the third installment of the Spiderman movie and its spin-off films.
“I know more than I’m allowed to say right now,” said Garfield. “I can say that I’m really excited about Drew Goddard, who’s going to be writing and directing the Sinister Six movie.”
“And whether I’m involved or not is kind of immaterial,” he added.
Screenrant summarizes the “Ultimate” version of Venom: “In the Ultimate universe, Venom is created as a special organic suit developed at Oscorp by Richard Parker (Peter’s dad) and Eddie Brock Sr, as a means to cure cancer. Peter and Eddie Brock Jr. (childhood friends in this version) end up bonding with samples of the Venom suit, resulting in the Ultimate versions of black-suit Spidey and Venom. Things later take a further turn when samples of Peter’s blood (containing Venom suit DNA) and Curt Connors/The Lizard’s blood are mixed together, resulting in a vampiric entity known as Carnage. Ultimate Carnage kills Gwen Stacy and takes her form (amongst others, T-100-style), until Spider-Man finally defeats it.”
The Venom movie is being written by Amazing Spider-Man 2 scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, working alongside co-writer Ed Solomon (Now You See Me);Kurtzman will also direct the film, his second directorial feature project after People Like Us.

A female driven film for 2017 moved ahead as well: “After the villains emerge, get ready for the power of the women from the Spider-Man universe. Which characters they will develop is up for speculation, but we know that Lisa Joy (Westworld, Reminiscence) has been hired to script and that again Arad and Tolmach are producing. There are several strong possibilities — Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar and Spider-Woman, to name a few,” notes the Deadline update.
Marton Csokas says he’d love to return to the franchise and reprise his role as Dr. Kafka HERE. Fans may also see Rhys Ifans return as Lizard – listen to this interview for more HERE
