Sophie Turner talks Jean Grey in ‘X-men Apocalypse’
Bryan Singer returns to helm a new X-Men film with this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse and Sophie Turner is joining the all-star cast as Jean Grey.
“The difference between this and Famke’s Jean Grey is she’s young and isolated and so insecure and very alienated – even from the other mutants – because she’s so powerful,” Turner said to EW.
“So there’s a real vulnerability to her and it’s great to see how her and Scott [Tye Sheridan] find each other through that alienation. She’s a great role to play, she’s so much fun, and her arc in the movie is amazing.”
This version, as envisioned by screenwriter Simon Kinberg, is just as powerful as the Jean that was introduced during the original trilogy.
Turner had joked about wanting to play a Marvel hero years ago, telling EW in October of 2014 that, “I think it would be really cool to do like a Marvel project with superheroes, because that’s so far from what I’ve done so far. But I don’t have a particular role or particular person I would like to play. It’s not like the roles I’ve had aren’t dream roles, but I don’t have one I’m after. But a superhero would be fun.”
When she got the X-Men: Apocalypse role, she looked back on that moment, saying: “I’m just going to start saying a lot more things that I’d like,” Turner joked. “ ‘I’d really like a few boxes of cookies!’”
Turner co-stars in Season 6 of HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Oscar Isaac stars as the titular villain with his “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”: Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Archangel (Ben Hardy).
Professor X (James McAvoy) leads the team of X-Men with Jennifer Lawrence returning as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast with Lucas Till (Havok), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Rose Byrne (Moira).
Also new to the franchise are Lana Condor (Jubilee), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) with a rumored appearance by Hugh Jackman.
