Sony hires ‘Equalizer 2’ writer Richard Wenk to pen ‘Kraven the Hunter’ film
What Sony calls their Spider-verse expanded by one project, confirmed to be moving forward by hiring a writer for their Kraven the Hunter film.
Collider broke the news of hiring screenwriter Richard Wenk, who is riding the success of The Equalizer 2.
News came in 2017 that Sony had grand plans for Kraven, Carnage and Mysterio: The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that Carnage will appear as the villain in next year’s Venom movie before noting plans for Mysterio.
“…known as Sergei Kravinoff, Kraven the Hunter is one of Spider-Man’s best known and most formidable enemies, as well as the half-brother of the Chameleon,” summarized the Collider post. “The character has appeared in numerous Spider-Man properties including animated series, video games and of course, the Marvel comics, including the popular story Kraven’s Last Hunt. Kraven is known for hunting big game, but what is Kraven without his white whale Spider-Man, who he considers his ultimate trophy?”
The outlet accurately noted that Venom will be the key to fueling Sony’s grand plans. If it doesn’t pan out then more “villain centric” films from the Spidey comics will be less likely.
As Slash Film recalled: “The studio has been dabbling with the idea of villainous spin-offs for a while now. When Spider-Man was rebooted at Sony with The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony had big dreams of launching a whole cinematic universe that would include a Sinister Six movie (which would’ve included Kraven as a character). But The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a disappointment, and the future of Spider-Man spin-offs was uncertain for a while. Now, they’re forging ahead.”
