Sofia Boutella’s monster stars in ‘The Mummy’ featurette

Universal Pictures has released a new featurette promoting the upcoming reboot of The Mummy directed by Alex Kurtzman.

Over the last few weeks, fans have learned details regarding the past of Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), an Egyptian Princess who was imprisoned when she summoned a great evil and murdered her father when he failed to uphold his promise to make her pharaoh after he sired a son leading to her becoming the horrific monster in the film.

In the new featurette, Boutella along with Kurtzman, Tom Cruise, visual effects supervisor Erik Nash, makeup and hair designer Lizzie Georgiou and special effects makeup designer David White take you through the series of transformations undergone by Ahmanet in the film and tease the phsyicality Boutella has brought to the role.

Cruise is Nick Morton, an amoral tough guy who runs afoul of a resurrected ancient Egyptian. Russell Crowe is Dr. Henry Jekyll.

Boutella impressed fans in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond and playing the titular creature will cement her in the minds of fanboys everywhere. The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Chasty Ballesteros and Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson)

The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
