Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez upsets Democrat Joe Crowley
There was a shocking upset of Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in Tuesday’s New York primary, which has stunned the Democratic establishment and sets a different tone for the future battles as socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to the victory.
Crowley’s loss in his Queens district to Ocasio-Cortez, 28, gives Democrats a different look as the young Latina would be the youngest woman ever elected to the House.
“I’m floored,” a senior Democratic House aide told CNN.
Ocasio-Cortez took 57 percent of the Democratic primary vote to 43 percent for Crowley.
“We meet a machine with a movement, and that is what we have done today,” Ocasio-Cortez told NY1 before the race was called. “I think what we’ve seen is that working class Americans want a clear champion and there is nothing radical about moral clarity in 2018.”
Trump tweeted after Crowley’s loss, calling him a “big Trump hater” and “perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!”
Crowley, the No. 4-ranking House Democrat, was widely seen as the likely successor to House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, sharing the spotlight with current House minority whip, Steny Hoyer.
