SNL’s Katie Rich suspended after twitter attack on Barron Trump, Chelsea Clinton responds
Katie Rich, a writer for Saturday Night Live, has been suspended from her position at that show after a tweet mocked Barron Trump, drawing widespread criticisms. Hillary Clinton’s daughter posted a response on Facebook, calling for the media to leave the boy alone and that he “deserves the chance every child does — to be a kid.”
That tweet on Friday, during President Trump’s inauguration ceremony stated that “Barron will be this country’s first homeschool shooter” resulted in Rich deleting the post and deactivating her Twitter account.
NBC immediately suspended Rich and her name did not appear in the closing credits of “Saturday Night Live” in its broadcast on Saturday.
On Sunday the former first daughter, Chelsea Clinton, wrote a Facebook post imploring that Barron, 10, be left alone.
“Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does — to be a kid,” Ms. Clinton wrote in a post that received more than 105,000 reactions and was shared close to 9,000 times, as others recirculated her message on their own feeds.
“Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids,” Ms. Clinton added.
On Monday, Rich Rich reactivated her account and posted a message that said: “I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry.”
Rich was hired to join SNL at the end of 2013 and the controversy added to the contention between the President and the show. The Jan. 14 broadcast included actor Alec Baldwin as Trump in a parody of his news conference from earlier that week, Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter the following day:
“NBC News is bad but Saturday Night Live is the worst of NBC. Not funny, cast is terrible, always a complete hit job. Really bad television!”
NBC said on Monday that Baldwin will host Saturday Night Live on Feb. 11 and appear throughout that program.
