Singapore dengue cases continue to climb, sixth fatality reported
The number of dengue fever cases continue to be reported on the island-state of Singapore as health authorities have reported nearly 1,500 new cases since Sept. 15, according to data from the National Environmental Agency (NEA).
The agency’s latest number as of today is 17,466 cases, up from 16,054 cases reported on Sept. 15.
In addition, the Singapore Ministry of Health has reported the sixth death from locally acquired dengue fever last week.
According to the report, the patient, who lived at Yishun Ring Road, was a 35-year-old Chinese woman who went to the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) Emergency Department (ED) on 28 Sep 2013 with a history of fever, chest pain, lethargy, nausea and loss of appetite.
She was diagnosed with Dengue Fever and admitted. Her condition deteriorated after admission and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. She subsequently passed away on 30 Sep 2013.
The patient’s residence was in a dengue cluster of three cases. NEA inspectors will continue with checks and conduct vector control operations in the area and residents are encouraged to cooperate fully.
In addition, the public is reminded that it is still dengue season in Singapore and they should remain vigilant and clear any stagnant water in their homes and the vicinity.
