Should Parents Consider Allowing Their Children to Learn to Code?
Technology is a significant part of our daily lives, and for practical purposes, many parents are introducing their children to the joys of learning to code and other techniques related to developing computer programs. Some would say that this sudden interest in coding is nothing but a passing trend. However, it is not likely so because it is not possible to see any reduction in the need for advancements in the use of computers and computing in general.

What does it mean for kids to learn to code?
Coding for kids refers to programs and other opportunities available through educational institutions through which children will be introduced and involved in learning computer coding. Some people may think that this discipline is far too complicated for young minds to grasp, but in reality, these programs are explicitly designed to make learning fun and achievable depending on your child’s age. Parents can select from summer camp programs that provide children with access to all the tools they need such as computers, and supplementary resources which reinforce the fun aspect of coding.
The fundamentals of computer coding are basically how people and computers communicate. A code is a language used to develop and run programs, websites, and applications. Essentially, coding is like learning to read and write using a unique language. Similar to any language, coding also has many dialects so to speak. There’s JAVA, HTML, CSS and many more.
Should children learn to code?
When the idea of teaching kids how to code first came about, there was no surprise why parents felt that it was a premature or unusual direction. But times have changed, and nowadays, some of the most lucrative careers are related to computer science and programming. There is a continuous high demand for skilled individuals because although many children begin their education with science and technology as the background, only a few of them move forward with pursuing formal training in computer science and programming. Hence, jobs abound, and only a few have the skills to fill them.
How does learning to code early benefit children?
The next issue we need to address then is to make a compelling point on the advantages of learning to code early. After all, anyone who wants a career in technology can pursue it in college. But why introduce children to coding?
- Coding enhances problem-solving skills. If you have a child who is showing potential in disciplines that are related to science and analytics, exposure to coding helps develop and improve problem-solving skills. To learn to code, you need to begin by understanding a complex problem and then breaking it down into small chunks to arrive at a solution.
- Coding develops perseverance. Coding is hard, and it takes effort and persistence to perfect a program. Children will have a great sense of accomplishment when they can complete a simple application and run in after the hard work they’ve put into it.
Undoubtedly, learning to code is an exciting prospect for children. Nonetheless, every parent still needs to proceed with a moderate amount of caution and ensure that they are allowing their children to choose for themselves whether or not learning to code is something that they wish to pursue.
