‘Sherlock Special’ details
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are on the case of a Victorian mystery in the first trailer for Sherlock‘s holiday special, a “re-imagining the show’s beloved characters” in the 1890s.
Sherlock‘s brand new teaser was unveiled during a panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Co-showrunner Steven Moffat recently revealed that the decision to use a Victorian setting was based purely on his desire to see Holmes and Watson in their traditional era.
“We’ve got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson of a generation – we want to see them do it in the proper outfits, just once,” Moffat said.
The one-off special will arrive in cinemas, but is not connected to Sherlock’s modern-day episodes.
“That makes them the only two who’ve done both [period and contemporary] – apart from [Basil] Rathbone and [Nigel] Bruce, who we venerate, of course.”
No air date has yet been set for the Sherlock special, although it is expected to premiere in the fall, with a theater roll-out being planned for select countries
Moffat attempted to assure fans when asked if they may run out of ideas or stories.
“At this stage, given that there is so much original, and we make the show like the glacier that advances across Europe, we’re not in any real danger of running out,” said Moffat.
“I think Arthur Conan Doyle could catch up with us and he’s dead…He wrote 60 of them, we’ve made 10.”
Moffat then added: “In the event that all of our other careers failed,” he said, “and we were making loads of Sherlock every year in desperation, we would generate new stories. We very rarely, as you know, accurately and faithfully adapt the story. We make a new story out of an old one… In effect, we make a new story, and we are happy to do so and would continue to do so. In the event by some miracle, we happened to use up all of the 60 stories, let’s be honest, do you know how old we would be?”
