‘Shang-Chi’ set for Chinese New Year, stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung as Mandarin

The announcement of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at Comic-Con in San Diego, California, over the weekend gave fans their first insight into one of the most interesting projects of Phase Four (the term used for this upcoming lot of films).

The first appearance of Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi will screen legend Tony Leung Chiu-wai the first Hong Kong actor to star in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, cast as the film’s villain, The Mandarin.

Leung is joined by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu and Asian-American rapper-turned-actress Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) in the main cast. The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for the critically acclaimed film Short Term 12 (2013).

Liu, who is best known for his role on the CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience, has been cast as the titular character.

“He’ll be a household name soon enough,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told CNN after an announcement-packed panel.

“Our films play around the world and we want the films to reflect that world,” he said. “When you have people in front of the camera who reflect it it’s great for audiences, when you have people behind it who reflect it, it’s great for us because you get better stories and better ideas.”

“All I’ve ever wanted to do when I was growing was make [my parents] proud,” Liu said on stage at Comic-Con. “What I’m trying to say is, I’m really happy I’m not a doctor. So, take that mom and dad.

“I was cast on Tuesday,” Liu said of the lightning-fast process that brought him to Hall H. “I screen-tested on Sunday in New York. This is the craziest, craziest dream.” He also said that his parents moved to Canada 25 years ago with almost nothing but a hope to build a life for their family and “all I’ve ever wanted was to make them proud.”

Shang-Chi, who in the comics was born in China to a Chinese father and a white American mother, first appeared in 1973’s Special Marvel Edition No. 15 and was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin after Marvel failed to acquire the comic book rights to the TV series Kung Fu.
Shang-Chi was trained as a martial artist assassin by his father, the infamous pulp villain Fu Manchu, but later became a hero after rebelling against his father’s ways. Shang-Chi was a hit character in the ’70s, and recently saw a revival as a member of the Avengers during 2012’s Marvel Now! Publishing event.
Marvel does not have the rights to Fu Manchu, a character ripe with xenophobic “yellow peril” tropes and one Disney will not be interested in investing in, but fans can expect a father-son story, with the studio revealing that the Mandarin would be the antagonist.
The character was played by Ben Kingsley in 2013’s Iron Man 3, with the conceit being that Kingsley was a thespian hired to play the genius-bad guy as a diversionary ruse.
Wonder Woman 1984 screenwriter Dave Callaham is penning the script for Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits theaters February 12, 2021.
