Sequel News: ‘GI Joe 3’ villains, ‘Frozen 2’ and ‘Insurgent’ goes ‘virtual’
As the movie season moves past the Oscars, there are a few bits worth noting: Frozen fans getting a tease with the new short, GI Joe 3 villain rumors heat up and the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, drops a virtual reality experience for their fans.
While rumors of “it’s in the works,” Disney has been quiet on a Frozen 2, but fans do get a tease with a new short ahead of Cinderella, featuring all of the characters from the blockbuster film. For detailed coverage on the short, titled Frozen Fever, click here.
G.I. Joe 3
After two films, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount still hasn’t managed to find the right formula for a box office success. The studio and toymaker, Hasbro, will try again and according to Film Divider, G.I. Joe 3 could very well feature Matt Trakker, a member of the elite military unit known as the Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand and the lead character from the ‘M.A.S.K.’ animated series and toy line.
It is also possible to see the twins, Tomax and Xamot, mainstays of the G.I. Joe animated series, in the third film in an effort to expand the universe. The project was thought to be coming to theaters next year, but that seems to be increasingly unlikely.
DJ Caruso is rumored to be helming the film, so a 2017 release would be the earliest.

Lionsgate surprised Insurgent fans with the “Insurgent – Shatter Reality” virtual reality experience, available first through Samsung Gear VR powered by the Galaxy Note 4 in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin and San Francisco, prior to going live across all platforms and app stores.
“Lionsgate said that consumers will be immersed in the role of “Divergent” members of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction and are subjected to a series of mental “simulations” in order to determine the full extent of their divergence — including experiencing two distinct “fearscapes” transporting them from the heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to being faced by a fast-approaching locomotive,” writes Variety.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had announced the virtual reality promotion for the film during the company’s Feb. 6 conference call with analysts.
“As part of the film’s rollout, our marketing campaign will also incorporate an immersive, state-of-the-art virtual reality experience,” he said during the call. “In addition to the excitement that it brings to the ‘Insurgent’ campaign, the VR experience underscores our focus on cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to reshape our marketing, expand the worlds of our franchises and add premium value to our content.”
Insurgent arrives in theaters on March 20, 2015.
