Senate votes 100-0 to move ahead on Obamacare debate after Ted Cruz marathon

The Senate easily overcame Wednesday’s first hurdle on finalizing funding for the government after the GOP launched an effort to defund Obamacare.

Ted Cruz mounted a 21-hour filibuster style campaign urging Senators to keep the government running, but exclude Obamacare from the budget.

“This was all about elevating the debate in the public and giving the American people the chance to speak,” Cruz told ABC News after his marathon speech. “At this point, the debate is in the hands of the American people.”

The rare 100-0 vote to end this first round of debate showed how eager senators were to move the bill forward.

Cruz is urging his Republican colleagues to vote against cloture (or ending debate) on the actual spending measure, a vote that will likely occur Friday.

Wearing black tennis shoes for comfort, the senator said on the Senate floor, “I will say standing here after 14 hours, standing on your feet, there’s sometimes some pain, sometimes some fatigue that is involved.

“But you know what? There’s far more pain involved in rolling over, far more pain in hiding in the shadows, far more pain in not standing for principle, not standing for the good, not standing for integrity.”

“My own view is it would be to the advantage of our colleagues in the House, who are in the majority, to shorten the process,” said Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who has distanced himself from Cruz’s strategy. “If the House doesn’t get what we send over there until Monday, they’re in a pretty tough spot.”

Republicans in the House and Senate believe a do-over in the House could have better results, if they attach a healthcare provision that would be difficult for Democrats to oppose — such as a repeal of the new tax on medical device manufacturers that some Democrats dislike, or a delay of the individual mandate that all Americans carry health insurance in 2014.
