Search continues for Jonathan Stenberg, man wanted for decapitating Ned Kelly
A huge manhunt in Australia continues as police continue their search for the alleged murderer Jonathon Andrew Stenberg, wanted in the gruesome murder case of Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly.
Stenberg, age 46, enters his fourth day in the Northern Territory, Senior Sergeant Greg Pusterla says police have received lots of phone calls regarding suspicious activity in Darwin’s outer suburbs where they believe him to be.
“Acting on intelligence we are confident that the area where resources are currently concentrated are appropriate to maximise the likelihood of locating Mr Stenberg,” Snr Sgt Pusterla told ABC Radio.
NZ Herald reports that a large number of police continue to search for Stenberg, with dogs and a helicopter with thermal imaging equipment on board part of the efforts.
Stenberg once served as a member of the Australian Defence Forces and been on assignment overseas. Police say he is armed and dangerous and should not be approached.
“We have responded to numerous reports of activity and movement in the primary search area,” Northern Watch Commander Louise Jorgenson said.
“At various times, we blocked roads. At this point, if Mr Stenberg is listening (to ABC radio) we urge him to turn himself in, and turn himself in peacefully.”
Meanwhile, a barman at a Broadwater hotel Stenberg came into the pub and shouted drinks for locals four days before Kelly’s body was discovered. Ron Wilson says one of the patrons told him Stenberg had showed him a rifle in his car.
“One of the patrons, the next day, told me, yeah, he had guns, and showed him some guns,” he said.
