SDCC: ‘Thor Ragnarok’ trailer, movie poster, more details emerge

Thor: Ragnarok stole the show at SDCC, well for at least for a bit. Check out the incredible trailer below, some photos and more as the film was a major hot spot at the massive convention.

There is so much to excite fans in the trailer which reveals Karl Urban’s Skurge, “Team Thor,” Hulk talking with a new haircut and then the climax Hulk taking on another monster of Norse mythology, the fire giant Surtur. Ol’ Surtur is a classic enemy of Marvel’s Thor, whose appearances are usually a bit more infrequent and (potentially) apocalyptic than other villains like Loki and Malekith.

Hulk faces off against a giant wolf. We don’t know whether that’s supposed to be Hela or one of her minions transformed, but mythologically speaking it’s Fenris, a child of Loki (like Hela herself) who is destined to devour Odin at Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse.

More details at the bottom.

Nerdist details a ton more from the panel: “Taika Waititi plays rock monster Korg, whom Thor finds as a cellmate. The thunder god tries to run, but the hallway they’re in is an infinite loop — run one way and you’ll just come right back the other. Korg wants a revolution but he’s lazy and finicky, and he also serves as inadvertent hype man for the Grand Champion, by pointing out all their fellow cellmates whom said champ has defeated…each one of whom is actually dead, and especially a recent one named Doug.

Waititi said he based Korg on “Polynesian nightclub bouncers” whom he says are huge but always have delicate voices.

The Grand Champion, of course, is Hulk.

Loki has been ruling Asgard for four years, devoting his energies to narcissistic self-glorification rather than governance. But now Ragnarok is coming, courtesy of Hela, and he’s not ready.

“Thor’s having a midlife crisis…. I’ve played this character five times so — I thought if we’re going to make another Thor film, there needs to be some changes not just to [Thor]…. but to the whole Marvel universe.”

Hemsworth: “Thor gets his ass kicked in this movie.”

Jeff Goldblum on his character The Grandmaster:“I’m playing The Collector’s brother… We’re very old. We came into being shortly after the big bang.”

Mark Ruffalo did reveal that when we meet the big guy on Sakaar, he’s been in the form of Hulk for two years. Hulk basically refuses to turn back into Bruce Banner because he’s enjoying his life as The Grandmaster’s gladiator champion and Ruffalo says, “He’ll be damned if he’s gonna go back to Banner.”

Story: In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his home world and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first, he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi with a screenplay by Eric Pearson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Loki. They are joined by Cate Blanchett (Hela), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Jeff Goldblum(Grandmaster), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Karl Urban (Skurge), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Sam Neill, Ray Stevenson (Volstagg), Tadanobu Asano (Hogun), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), and Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange).
