SDCC 2019: WandaVision, Loki TV series confirmed for Spring 2021

At San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, Marvel exec Kevin Feige offered up details on Marvel Studios’ films and projects, confirming two of projects for Disney+ in 2021.

WandaVision, a Marvel original TV series starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch will arrive in spring, 2021 and Loki, the Marvel TV series starring Tom Hiddleston as the titular antihero, also set for spring, 2021.

Feige confirmed that WandaVision will be tied-in directly with Doctor Strange 2 and going forward, all the Disney Plus shows will be closely related to and impact the narrative of the larger MCU.

“These episodes will intersect with the movies in a very big way. It’s a totally new form of storytelling that we get to play with and explore. It’s the first long-form narrative that Marvel Studios has done — they’ll be six episodes, eight episodes, 10 episodes with the actors from the films playing their characters. They’ll be changing, evolving, growing in those event series and then those changes will be reflected in their next film appearances.”

“These episodes will intersect with the movies in a very big way,” Feige shared with Variety about the new shows. “It’s a totally new form of storytelling that we get to play with and explore.”

“It’s the first long-form narrative that Marvel Studios has done — they’ll be six episodes, eight episodes, 10 episodes with the actors from the films playing their characters,” Feige added. “They’ll be changing, evolving, growing in those event series and then those changes will be reflected in their next film appearances.”

Actress Teyonah Parris, who was confirmed to appear in the Disney+ series WandaVision,. was present at Comic-Con.

Parris will be playing the adult version of Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel. Young Monica was played by Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel, which takes place in 1995. Paul Bettany is expected to have a role, but no new details emerged during the panel.

Jac Schaeffer, who wrote Captain Marvel will serve as the showrunner of WandaVision which will be available the second year after the November launch of Disney+.

Feige also offered news on Loki, a Marvel Studios original series streaming on Disney+ in the spring of 2021.

Hiddleston will be back as the fan favorite, the role of the mercurial Loki, the god of mischief and everyone’s favorite villain, received a huge welcome from fans when Feige brought him out on stage.

Then to the delight of the audience, Hiddleston answered the biggest question from Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame: “Where did Loki go when he took the Space Stone?”

“You guys saw Avengers, right? He’s still that guy. And just about the last thing that happened to him was that he got Hulk-smashed, so there’s a lot of psychological evolution that hasn’t happened yet, but Kevin has generously showed me what his plans are — I can’t tell you any of them — but it’s is one of the most exciting creative opportunities I think I’ve ever come across.”

Digital Spy’s first look at Loki earlier this year put the filming in the 1970s (note the Jaws reference in the background). Check that out HERE

It has previously been reported that the series will see Loki weave his mischievous magic throughout historical events, which suggests we might be jumping around the decades a bit.

The pilot Loki episode was written by Rick and Morty‘s Michael Waldron, who will also serve as the creator and showrunner.
