SDCC 2014: Christopher Nolan, Matthew McConaughey, details on new ‘Interstellar’ trailer
Popular director Christopher Nolan and star Matthew McConaughey surprised a massive crowd at San Diego Comic Con to promote the upcoming science fiction film Interstellar. Fans got a sneak at a new Interstellar trailer and some fun from the duo.
“Well, I heard a lot about this place being the most passionate about movies and pop-culture in general,” said Nolan about why he finally chose to visit Comic-Con despite never appearing to promote any of his Batman films. “I wanted to see what the fuss was all about.” The crowd roared in approval, causing Nolan to add with a chuckle: “And judging by the crowd here, I’m not disappointed.”
Reportedly the crowd numbered over 6,000 and treated McConaughey and Nolan like superstars.
Nolan explained in the panel that he hopes mankind is at the beginning of a new age of space exploration, and this film appears to be his attempt at reaching kids and exciting them about the universe. The director said that he hopes children go with their parents and that they’ll be engaged the way he was by the original Star Wars and 2001.
The trailer began in the same way as the previous footage, McConaughey’s character, named Cooper, making the difficult decision to leave his family behind on Earth to save all of humanity. Humanity is facing possible extinction after severe climate change has resulted in a depleted food supply.
“We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars,” says Cooper over footage of dying crops and dust-covered cars and homes. “Now we just look down, and worry about our place in the dirt.”
The trailer set up the same dilemma previewed in previous trailers: Humanity is struggling to survive after severe climate change has depleted the food supply.
Anne Hathaway finally makes an appearance, part of the mission to the edge of the galaxy and they visit at least an alien planet. The planet features gray dunes and a body of water. The small ship floats to space as rays diverge into a circle.
The trailer is supposed to hit the web soon, so hopefully the rest of the world won’t have to wait too long to see this excellent preview.

The film also stars Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Timothee Chalamet, Topher Grace, and Matt Damon.
Interstellar opens on November 7th.
