SDCC 2014: ‘Avengers Age of Ultron’ trailer details, Paul Bettany, James Spader talk
The highlight of SDCC had to be a room full of rabid fans chanting Avengers Assemble just as Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige took the stage to preview The Avengers: Age of Ultron. With director Joss Whedon absent, just having knee surgery, the panel included stars Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Cobie Smulders, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany.
“Everybody has been incredibly welcoming… It’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to my children,” Bettany said in response to what it is like playing The Vision. “It energizes me,” Jackson said when asked about putting the “eye patch on again.”
James Spader voices the titular villain and noted that “Life could never get weird or crazy enough for me…” and that SDCC “may be the weirdest and craziest place” he’s ever been to…”I play an 8-foot robot in this movie. And it was… I’ve always played humans up until then. Shooting this film, it was as startling and surprising and exciting as coming [to Hall H] for the first time.”
Scarlett Johansson was also absent due to her pregnancy, but figures into the film.
What did fans learn at SDCC: the heroes struggling pick up Thor’s hammer won over fans, Ultron wrecks their party, the look is much darker than the first film, the Hulkbuster armor does make an appearance. Most importantly Ultron steals the show: “How could any of you be worthy? You’re all killers,” are his first words.
“I know you’re ‘good’ people,” he tells them. “I know you mean well. But you just didn’t think it through… There is only one path to peace — your extermination.”
Other moments: Banner dazed in the snow, Thor smashing a tank, Widow on Cap motorcycle, Quicksilver running in a blur of silver and blue, a possible romantic moment between Widow and Banner, and the climax to end all: what appears to be a pile of dead Avengers.
Just ahead of SDCC was the first look at Ultron released via EW.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to release in theaters on May 1, 2015.
