Sci-Fi Movie News: ‘Independence Day’ and ‘World War Z’ sequels, ‘Stargate’ trilogy
More reboots, remakes and sequel news, including the latest is a reboot of the Stargate franchise as the studio looks to make a trilogy. From Paramount comes news on a sequel to World War Z and Indpendence Day gets a new writer for a sequel.
Stargate
Director Roland Emmerich has been talking about a potential sequel or reboot of his 1994 sci-fi film Stargate for years. The new plan involves plans for a new trilogy says the THR report.
“MGM will be running production on Stargate, with Jonathan Glickman, president, motion picture group, overseeing the project on behalf of MGM and Greg Silverman, president, creative development and worldwide production, overseeing for Warner Bros. Pictures.’
Independence Day 2
Emmerich is also attached to a sequel to the blockbuster Independence Day. Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has hired Carter Blanchard to pen a new draft of the screenplay while Emmerich shoots his gay rights period drama Stonewall.
Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Deviln penned the initial draft of the follow-up before turning over scripting duties in earnest to Emmerich’s White House Down scribe James Vanderbilt notes Collider.
World War Z
Paramount is moving ahead with a sequel to the hugely successful zombiefest with director Juan Antonio Bayona set to direct. Variety reports that Steven Knight will write the script for the untitled World War Z sequel.
“The hiring of Knight comes weeks after it was announced that Pitt was in early talks to star in an untitled World War II romantic thriller, also written by Knight.”
