San Diego man John McCarthy identified as victim in Nevada plane crash with Lorenzo Harris
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the family has confirmed John McCarthy was the man who died in a Nevada small private plane crash.
McCarthy, 59, was the director of maintenance at the California Flight Academy in El Cajon.
The Clark County coroner’s office has identified Lorenzo Harris, 48, also of California, was a victim in crash, killed from thermal and blunt force injuries.
The crash on September 7 near near Henderson Executive Airport was due to a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff and caught fire before crashing into the desert, according to authorities.
According to his family, McCarthy’s body was badly burned in the crash and that’s probably why the coroner’s office hasn’t positively identified him yet.
McCarthy’s step daughter started a GoFundMe for her stepfather on Saturday to raise money for her mother, Linda McCarthy, who is planning to travel from California to Las Vegas to retrieve John McCarthy’s body, as well as to pay for memorial services in California and Massachusetts, where John McCarthy grew up.
The man was was flying home from Las Vegas after a work trip, in the valley to work on a separate plane the flight academy owns that needed maintenance.
