Ruby Nicanor of Maasin City takes home gold at National Boxing Championships

With a crowd of Maasin City National High School students cheering on the lone woman entry in the host city’s team, third-year high school student from Maasin City, Ruby Nicanor, earned more punching points to win over Liezel Mae Alde, from General Santos City, in the Girls Fly Weight, 50-kilogram to become the champion in that division, according to a Philippines Information Agency report Sunday.

Last year, Nicanor settled for a silver medal in the National Championships.

The barangay Asuncion resident took on and beat Judith Balasangay of Northern Samar in the semifinals to advance to the finals to battle the General Santos City pugilist.

Round one was even for both girls as they gamely exchange fists and were too cautious of each others’ punches. But rounds two and three proved to be Ruby’s chance to pile up points against the good defense of the lady boxer from GenSan, according to a PhilBoxing report.

In an interview after the fight, Nicanor said she was afraid not of losing but on being embarrassed as the pressure for her to meet expectations was quite high.

She said she was willing to advance her boxing career, to join next year’s PLDT-ABAP championships, and ultimately to be part of a pool of fighters for consideration to the 2016 Brazil Olympics.
