Ron Paul Returns Money From His Office Budget To The US Treasury…Again!
Again, Texas Congressman Ron Paul shows consistency while he walks the walk and talks the talk. This time it’s concerning his office budget.
For 2011, he returned a $140,000 chunk of cash back to the US Treasury beating out last year’s sum returned of $100,000 by 40%.
The $140,000 is approximately 10% of his total office funds.
Returning money to the Treasury from his Congressional office budget is nothing new. In 2009, Ron Paul returned $90,000 from his office budget, and in 2008, he returned $58,000.
It is one thing to talk the game of fiscal conservatism, it’s quite another when you actually live it. Congressman Paul explained why he sends the money back:
“Since my first year in Congress I have managed my office in a frugal manner, instructing staff to provide the greatest possible service to the people of the 14th district at the least possible cost to taxpayers”
Granted, such savings are symbolic at best but are a testament to consistency. However, Paul isn’t the only one.
Congressman Bill Owens (D-NY), actually outdid the good doctor this year, returning a whopping $230,000 office surplus to the Treasury, a total of 15% of his office budget.
Owens concurs with Paul saying:
“We cannot seriously talk about reducing the national debt and deficit without first operating our own offices in a fiscally responsible manner.”
Unfortunately, people in Washington like Paul and Owens are few and far between.
