Ron Paul on Rand Paul: ‘We are about 99% the same on issues’
During the Geraldo Rivera Show today, the host discussed several issues with former Texas Congressman Ron Paul to include his son, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.
Rivera brought up the case of the newly founded Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, an organization whose goals are to educate and promote foreign affairs from a non-interventionist perspective.
The “Institute” has in recent days taken a barrage of criticism concerning members of his advisory board, the most blatant example being James Kirchick’s piece in the Daily Beast Thursday.
In the article, Kirchick, who is best known for his work at the New Republic, the neoconservative think tank the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and “exposing” the Ron Paul newsletters, comes out swinging, saying the Institute is comprised of “anti-Semites, 9/11 truthers and dictator lovers”.
This leads up to Rivera’s question, which he prefaces, “A lot of people are saying it’s [The Institute] the worst thing that could of happened for your son’s potential, national aspirations.”
“Do you take that with a grain of salt?”, Rivera asks. “Do you worry that it may affect your son’s possibilities?”
Dr. Paul bascially said there’s not much he can do about. He has no intention of changing what he’s been doing for decades.
He does say “I’m aware of it.” However, Paul doesn’t believe it would hurt Rand.
He goes on, “We do have some differences and our approaches will be different, but that makes him his own person. I mean why should he be a clone and do everything and think just exactly as I have. I think it’s an opportunity to be independent minded.”
Rivera then asks, “You don’t want him to forsake his dad?” “You know, he’s one thing and I’m another.”
Dr. Paul said, “I don’t think he will. We are about 99% the same on issues.”
