‘Rogue One’ star Riz Ahmed in talks for ‘Venom’ film with Tom Hardy
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed is in talks to join Tom Hardy in the upcoming Venom movie.
Variety reports that Sony is silent on Ahmed’s role in the film, but the sources confirm that he will be playing a popular Marvel character.
Rumors are that Carnage will play a role in Venom, but Justin Kroll tweeted that those sources say it’s not Carnage.
Borys Kit from THR tweeted that sources said he was up for the role before script changes. That could certainly indicate that Carnage is indeed in the film.
In addition to the role in Rogue One, Ahmed starred in HBO’s critically acclaimed The Night Of, Jason Bourne opposite Matt Damon and 2014’s Nightcrawler.
Venom previously appeared on the big screen, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Since the release of that film in 2007, rumors have persisted about a solo Venom movie, but various iterations of the project have failed to materialize.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Tom Hardy (Mad Max Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) will play the titular anti-hero. Carnage is Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who merged with the offspring of the alien symbiote Venom and resulted in an amplification of his already-psychotic nature. Carnage seems like a perfect fit for the “extreme” trend that permeated comics in the ’90s: he’s sort of like Venom, but blood red and much crazier and way more hardcore.
Venom will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and will also star Jenny Slate (voice actor in Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, The LEGO Batman movie), Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Manchester by the Sea), Reid Scott (Veep), Michelle Lee, Scott Haze (Thank You For Your Service), Kayko Thompson, Grace Wan, Jared Bankens, Apollo GT and Paul Pillsbury.
Venom arrives in theaters next year.
