Rodrigo Santoro, Xerxes In ‘300,’ Tries Hand At Romantic Comedy in ‘What to Expect When you are Expecting’
“What to expect when you are expecting” stars one of Brazil’s biggest stars and of comic book movies most hated villains in Rodrigo Santoro, who played Xerxes in “300.” The Brazilian talked to THR about his character, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Rock.
During an interview posted Monday, Santoro explains his role as Lopez’s husband, Alex.
“I liked the whole idea of Alex representing all the men, all over the world, that aren’t ready and scared to make a commitment to something that is definitely a life-changing experience. I liked that the character had a journey.”
The former “Lost” star praised his co-star Jennifer Lopez, citing their Latino blood as a reason for their great chemistry on set.
“She is incredibly talented and has a natural talent for comedy. She is funny and she made me feel comfortable right away. Somehow we had a connection on the Latin level. We are pretty similar in many ways… the way we are, we touch, we hug. We are very warm in that way.”
Another co-star, Chris Rock, offered Santoro insight into comedy and Improv.
“I did not expect to have to improvise so much. For me, it was tricky because they are hysterical, and I couldn’t laugh because I am supposed to be really freaking out with the whole situation.”
Comic book fans may not recognize Santoro without his make-up and connect the actor to his portrayal of Xerxes. The “300″ sequel will begin production later this summer and Santoro is signed to reprise his role.
Santoro, Lopez and Rock are part of the ensemble cast which also includes Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Dennis Quiad, Joe Manganiello, Matthew Morrison, Ben Falcone and Chace Crawford.
He also stars alongside Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen in HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn”, which will have its premiere at the Cannes film festival in the out-of-competition category.
