Robert Griffin III, RGIII, fires ‘tyranny of political correctness’ tweet during Redskins name controversy
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Tuesday complained about the “tyranny of political correctness” currently holding Americans “hostage.”
His comments, posted on his Twitter account, come as groups are demanding the Redskins change their team name because of its “racist” meaning.
“In a land of freedom we are held hostage by the tyranny of political correctness,” Griffin tweeted.
Griffin’s opinion has set off a frenzy of attacks and criticisms.
The football star also had to engage in a defense of his knowledge and use of the word tyranny. This prompted a fitting quote following the angry response to his tweet: “If we speak..we say it the wrong way If we do not speak we are cowards….”
The proposed name change from the Redskins to the Redtails is being pushed by a group backed by Washington D.C. Council member David Grosso.
An independent elected last year, Grosso said he plans to pursue his non-binding resolution because the current name is “a derogatory, racist name.”
“It’s been a long time that we’ve had this name associated with Washington, and I think its time we take a stand and change it,” Grosso said.
