Robert Downey Jr: no plans for ‘Iron Man 4’, fans still hoping

UPDATE: Some fans are still clamoring for “Iron Man 4” and hopeful that one of the three unnamed projects for 2020 is this project.

From Celebeat: What keeps the fans positive are the three unnamed Marvel movies slated to release in 2020. Since Robert Downey Jr. already confirmed the existence of “Iron Man 4,” it only makes sense that the fourth installment of the solo film of the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist is going to be one of the unlisted films.

No, not really.

2020 should bring Doctor Strange 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but the other one…that’s very uncertain. Having Downey Jr. appear in a different Marvel film for a short stint, much like the new Spidey film, seems more obvious than another bloated Iron Man project.

Fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow film, for a Mark Ruffalo led Hulk film, but a new project, Winter Soldier as Cap or big surprise project is more likely than IM4.

Listed as the second highest grossing film of 2013 following Disney’s animated “Frozen,” the third installment of Marvel’s superhero “Iron Man 3” had grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide. It was indeed a successful movie. Most of the time, if the film is a money-maker, producers are hungry for a sequel, even if it has “forced” storytelling. So, is “Iron Man 4” on its way to the big screen?

“There isn’t one in the pipe,” Robert Downey Jr. spoke with Variety. “No, there’s no plan for a fourth ‘Iron Man,'” said the actor who played the titular character in the “Iron Man” films.

In an interview with GQ, the “Sherlock Holmes” actor was asked if the rumors were true about his $50 million talent fee just to join “The Avengers.” Downey confirmed that the number was correct.

“Isn’t that crazy?” Downey uttered. “They’re so pissed. I can’t believe it. I’m what’s known as ‘a strategic cost,'” he added.

In the film “The Avengers,” Downey was working alongside other Marvel superheroes including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The film was not a solo Tony Stark movie, and it had cost the producers a lot already for Downey to be one of the cast members. Therefore, if Tony Stark will have another solo movie, how much would be Downey’s asking price?

Although “Iron Man 3” had over a billion earnings compared to its predecessors — “Iron Man” with about $585.2 million and “Iron Man 2” had gross of $623.9 million — a fourth installment that can surpass “Iron Man 3’s” gain cannot be guaranteed.

Meanwhile, filmmakers have an option to replace Downey for a next “Iron Man” installment.

Fans would still be able to see Tony Stark as he will appear in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” film this July 7.
